The Munich FUNCTIONAL METABOLOMICS Initiative is represented by a consortium of scientists from academia and industry. They are dedicated to promote metabolomics research at all levels of complexity. The group unifies experts from analytics, structural biololgy, biochemistry, food chemistry, human nutrition and eco-toxicology who study metabolites for the sake of understanding their structures, concentrations, interrelations and their dynamics in biological systems. This partnership is devoted to unify the expertise on metabolite analysis by using classical mass-based platforms and NMR-technologies in the greater Munich area. Both, the Technische Universität München as well as the Helmholtz-Zentrum München have a variety of NMR-experts and as a joint effort maintain the Bayerische NMR-Zentrum (Bavarian NMR-Center). In addition, various partner groups have state-of the art LC-based mass-spectrometry equipment for metabolite profiling and quantification. The expertise on Bioinformatics for data processing and statistical analysis is provided by partners from the Institute of Medical Informatics of the TUM medical faculty and the Helmholtz-Zentrum. The partners have initiated a joint project in which biofluids from a highly controlled human trial are submitted for the most comprehensive analysis via the NMR- and MS-platforms.
